Shenzhen moves quickly. New skyscrapers sprout-up with no warning. Imagine how long it would take you to discover the nuances of this ever changing city. Nearly no one that lives in Shenzhen was born in Shenzhen.
It is fair to say that even the local cab drivers, aren’t familiar with much of what you will find in Shenzhen The Book. Even more, the authors, Karen & Ted Rule, are true authorities on Shenzhen—they've known Shenzhen since before it was a city.
Ted & Karen first laid eyes on Shenzhen in 1971 when they took a taxi to the Lok Ma Chau police station in Hong Kong’s New Territories. Not much was there.
Since then, Shenzhen exploded into one of the most modern Chinese Mainland cities, while—at the same time—it’s the fastest growing city in the world.
Karen was originally a historian by training and she immersed herself in the fascinating but little known history of the area. Ted expanded his already considerable waistline by sampling the culinary delights and sneakily recording them. And thus this tome was born.
Where else are you going to get the kind of insights and perspective then from a couple who experienced the unfathomable growth of Shenzhen from the beginning of China’s economic reforms and Shenzhen’s boom?

When a venerable old China hand couple turn their hands to researching that extraordinary economic experiment, Shenzhen, others of the same ilk have to sit up and take notice. Ted Rule went into Beijing in 1974 as a language proficient trade official when the Australian Embassy had just been opened. Those who know him still smile at the recollection of his many anecdotes, some so amusing that a school of cynics exist who question their veracity. I don't. Ted was my mentor when I struggled with being a trade consultant in Beijing in the early 80's. We were trying to connect Australian companies with the one official in China responsible at the time for buying their product. We were fortunate enough to make some good contacts and several clients prospered.Shenzhen:The Book is replete with the little ironies and wry remarks Ted and Karen are known and loved for. The exhaustive research provides insights no tourist guide could provide and comes only from a long experience and love of their subject. Read the book. Even if you don't know them, you will come to realize why this couple are held in such reverence and affection in the China watching community.

Shenzhen The Book eBook Ted Rule Karen Rule Christopher Moore Brent Deverman Summer Zhuang Reviews
Only wish this was written sooner
I have the Lonely Planet guide for China and it didn't have much info on Shenzhen, where I'll be going for two on business next month. This book has everything I need to plan my business meeting and make the most out of my free time in the area. One of the better indie published guides I've seen in a while.
I have lived in Shenzhen for over 8 years and I was able to learn alot about this dynamic city. A must read for those who want a holistic view of this chaotic and ever changing city.
I have lived in Shenzhen for a year and a half and thought I knew a lot about the city but this book has proven me wrong! Really well written and informative. Today we went to Nantou Ancient City. Followed directions exactly as the book said. We took the metro to Taoyuan and then showed the taxi driver the address provided in the book. So easy! We will continue to use the book for our future touring in the city. Highly recommended for people living in SZ, moving to SZ or just wanting to read about SZ.
Shenzhen, unlike Beijing, Shanghai, or Hong Kong, is a city that is relatively unknown to most Westerners. It's a very young city, but it's also a huge metropolis with many diverse neighbourhoods. This is a great guide to get to know the city. I've lived in Shenzhen for 2 years and I definitely learned about new places from reading this book.
Planning to go to Shenzhen on a day trip from Hong Kong (during a stop over flight on my way home to USA from Korea), other than some sporadic websites and older books, this is the only book I've found that was recently published and has good content. I've already planned my itinerary thanks to the highlights it suggested. Definitely worthwhile for planning trip to Shenzhen.
I haven't read all the book yet so I can just share some impressions. I bought the electronic version before going to Shenzhen, read a few chapters and browsed through the book for information. I found the content interesting but when I tried to use it as a guidebook it was not very practical as it took me too much time to find specific information - it was lost in the jungle of less important details, anecdotes, etc. and sometimes the directions I was looking for were missing. I spent one month in Shenzhen and got to like the city. The Book played important part in my explorations and inspired me.
